Amazon.com Product Description:
Watch all the movies in your video collection in style and convenience with Toshiba's SD-V65HT. The silver and black system includes a space-saving combination DVD player/VCR coupled with a powered 5.1-channel speaker package. The DVD player is equipped with a ColorStream Pro progressive-scan output for superlative images on high-definition and HD-ready televisions, and in addition to full surround processing the system also plays your homemade CDs filled with MP3, WMA, and JPEG sound and image files. The VCR section offers 4-head, hi-fi playback and recording with convenient front-panel inputs for your camcorder, gaming device, or second VCR.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SD-V65HT's ColorStream Pro DVD player stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

The SD-V65HT also features Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive feature (3:2 pulldown). DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The speaker package features 4 two-way satellite speakers (front and surround left/right, powered by 90 watts apiece), a larger center-channel speaker (for handling most dialogue and critical sound effects, also 90 watts), and a 150-watt, 7-inch subwoofer to drive home the foundation-shaking bass effects of your favorite movies. All 5 main speakers are acoustically matched for seamless blending.

Surround processing includes decoding of Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II (which generates surround output from stereo sources), and an optical digital-audio input facilitates hookup with a CD recorder or alternate surround processor.

The system's Digital Photo Viewer lets you see digital JPEG photographs on any television; an intuitive onscreen display helps you customize slideshows with a few simple clicks of the remote. You can zoom, rotate, and pan the photos, as well as set the actual viewing time of each slide.

Other features include picture zoom, two auxiliary video inputs (one with S-video), and a universal remote control.

What's in the Box
DVD player/receiver, 5 satellite speakers, 1 subwoofer, AM loop and FM antennas, remote control, user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

Repair of SD-43HTSU "Hello...Protection...Goodbye"
The Toshiba SD-43HTSU and at least one other Toshiba system has a high failure rate. The unit comes on, displays "Hello...Protection...Goodbye" and shuts off.

Search of the web and a call to Toshiba both blame the problem on C27. For those not electronically minded, that is a Capacitor number 27.

This particular capacitor is a 100uF (microfarad) with a voltage rating of 16V. I have replaced C27 with a 100uF rated at 25V on the theory that excess voltage was the problem. So far so good. The unit works again!

To replace this capacitor (which costs less than a dollar at an electronics supply store), first remove the top cover. C27 is labeled in small print on the main board (biggest and below all other boards) near the center of the instrument. You will have to remove the bottom board entirely, which looks complicated but is not really too bad. To get at the main board, and unsolder C27, you have to remove the main board.

Do not worry about getting the connectors back where they came from. They are all keyed so that they go in only one way and the semi-permanent bend in the wires makes it pretty obvious where all the connectors go and which way.

In the way is a vertical board which runs from front to back. This vertical board is also attached permanently to a 3" X 5" board attached to the rear panel via the video input and output connectors. Both boards come out together if you unfasten the 3" X 4" board from the rear panel. The vertical board makes connection to the main board in two places with edge connectors on the vertical board. Note how they fit into the main board.

Remove every screw from the rear panel except those holding the fan and those holding the antenna connectors to the rear panel.

Carefully pull out the two flat cables from the center vertical board and one between the AM/FM tuner (small board in the left rear corner of instrument) to the 3" X 5" board. One connector with individual wires connects to the DVD assembly. It is soldered to the main board, but the connector comes out easily at the DVD assembly end.

Pull the sides of the instrument apart very slightly to unsnap the rear panel from the instrument. One connector below the 3" X 5" board connects to the power supply board directly beneath the 3" X 5" board. My instrument has a toroid around that cable...yours may not.

Pull out all the connectors to the main board and remove the 6 screws holding it to the bottom of the chassis. Remove the one screw toward the front of the instrument holding the vertical board in place.

Now you can tip the main board up and get to the back. Note that the capacitor has a minus sign on it. You must replace the old capacitor in the same orientation. The minus sign points to the left of the instrument. Unsolder C27 and replace with 100uF/25V.

Be sure you have connected all the cables up again when you reassemble the unit.

The whole job should take less than an hour and it sure beats the price of the repair or shipment to Toshiba.

I am visiting in Panama at the moment and Toshiba has no repair and no warranty here.

Important info for people with the
Toshiba will fix the problem for free. (...)

I give this HT system 4 stars because it gives a lot for the money. The region-free trick that just adds to the value. The sound could be a little clearer, and there's a very low hum when listening with headphones. Overall a good value if you're not a discerning listener.

good when it WORKS
Agan I am wrighting a review of somthing I don't own.
my good freind own's this, so I get to see and hear how it works and, this is what has been observed:
The picter is very good, DVD's look exatily as thay should, and it plays DVD+RW and +R -- at lest it use to: my freind recently got a Samsung up-converting DVD player, and I guess the Toshiba felt threntend, because it stoped showing a picture; swaped cabels, swaped inputs, nothing.
It seemse to have lost a baring on it's cooling fan as well.

Let's talk sound, that part still works, and prity good too; the center speaker on this is extremly clear, and over all the sound is plesent. it handels the Jenson C990 floorstanding speakers he has for the fronts. The sound can be boomy, so subwoofer placment is inportent, and there is no tone control.

When it did work completly, it was recamendable.
just don't be too suprised when it stops working.

Great sound for the price
I am really happy with this system, especially at the price it's a good buy. The biggest negative is the lack of "audio in" on the back. I didn't know that until I got home and went to plug some things in. I had to connect it differently than I had wanted, and if I expand in the future it will be difficult, but again, for the price I am very happy!

Basic System
We're not audiophiles but a new 47" hdtv deserves good sound, right? So, we just grabbed the cheapest one which happened to be this unit. It was so easy to hook up that I thought I must have done something wrong or missed something but it works great. The sound is fine for these old ears and I'm still trying to figure out the different formats. It has a plug in for the ipod but I have to buy a dock separate. There is also no digital audio in or a lot of other plug options in the back. I guess I can use rca Y cables at teh audio input if we get a blueray player in the future, huh? The unit also takes up a lot of shelf space being wide and deep, though thin. The remote is bland and difficult to use in low light. It has an am/fm tuner so it can double as a mini stereo system without a lot of hardware.

had it for over 3 years, same as the first day
Most people can find the specs of this somwhere else. Video has always been top Notch, same with sound. I make movies and am a huge movie buff so Im constantly using this machine. Many reviewers out there don't respect their electronics so theirs don't last long. I know how to treat electronics, so this is the same as when I first got it. The VCR works just as well as any other. DVD is better than most. SOund is excellent. Features and remote control are awesome. If you can find this, get it! Well worth the price.
PS!! Properly Care for Your Electronics!!!

Packed with features, well worth the price.
I have been shopping for a new stereo for the past 10 years. I have since moved into a house, acquired multiple televisions, VCRs, DVD players, but no home theatre system. Instead, everything ran through my television speakers. My shelf was loaded with an Xbox game console, a cable box, a low-end DVD player and an unreliable VCR. Spanning 5 shelves, there is no room for much else. Then this system came along. My initial budget was B0001W01M4,200 (About 0 for the receiver and the rest for speakers.) The Toshiba SD-V55HT is an out-of-the box home theater system packed with features to free up my shelf and upgrade my audio life. Priced at less than 0, this was an easy buy. I have had the system now for 2 months and I'm very happy with it.The system comes with a VCR and DVD player and stereo receiver housed in one unit. The receiver has 5 different sound modes including Dolby Prologic II, Movie, Music, Matrix and 3-D Surround. In addition, there is also By-Pass which determines the type of audio is being received and handles it accordingly. It has one additional input in the back for my Xbox and another in front for the occasion when I want to hook up my video camera which I haven't tried yet.The speakers are lightweight. At 60w each for the 3 front speakers and 2 rear speakers and 100w for the subwoofer, this system is ideal for a small room which I have. The setup was a breeze. This is "stereos for dummies". Each of the speakers is color coded with a matching speaker wire. The manual helps you figure out how to get everything in the right place. The trickiest part is probably was getting my TV and cable box wired up properly, but essentially, its standard fare.Once you are up and running, you can run the setup to tell the system where the speakers are to optimize the audio experience. The system is silver and black with nice lines. The bookshelf speakers are short and small. It fits in well in my messy sun room without standing out.The big win is the addition of a DVD player, MP3/CD player and a VCR in one unit. Everything plays great. I have no complaints about the sound but I upgraded from my television speakers.

I was a little disappointed that the AM/FM radio antennae are independent from the cable antenna. The package comes with a cheap loop antenna for AM and a wire antenna for FM. I pull both along the side of my entertainment console and then hide them both behind a clock. The reception is passable. The remote is fairly familiar to handle the VCR, DVD player, MP3/CD player and radio. But you can't give up your other remotes. It doesn't handle the television or the cable box. This is really a bother since my TV is also a Toshiba. The MP3 screen display unfortunately doesn't make good use of the space. The left half of the screen displays the track and navigates folders fine enough. The right have is reserved for manually assembling a play list which I will likely never do. I would have rather liked to see a full-screen with each track well displayed and this split screen only when I decide to build a play list. The presets for the radio are a bit tricky. Each slot can hold an AM and FM station. This gets confusing when you switch to the radio and the wrong station comes up. I would have preferred that each slot is configured for one station and either AM or FM. A minor nit. This plug-n-play system came with a DVD player, a CD and MP3 player, a VCR, AM/FM, cable and two other inputs. No doubt about it, at 9 this is a great price. Comparable systems lacked a DVD player, MP3 player or the VCR for the same price or more. One day, I am may still upgrade to the system of my dreams, but this is a nice step in the right direction.Pros: Packed with features and well worth the price.Cons: AM/FM seems like a poor add-on.Bottom Line: Boat-load of features for a great price for a small room.
